Conditions We Treat
Addictive
Disorders, sometimes just called
Addictions
occur when a behavior appears to "take over"
an individual. Even though that individual
may know that the behaviors are excessive,
or are causing problems, they are unable
to stop.
Additionally, a sort of "denial" develops
so that even though other people can identify
and express other concern about the addiction,
the addict does not see these or dismisses
their severity.
Anorexia
is an illness that mainly affects adolescent
girls although in recent years there has
been a rise in the number of boys with
the disorder. The most common features
are loss of weight and a change in behavior
in which the weight loss may become severe
and life threatening: Typical symptoms
are:
- Despite being underweight, the patient
intensely fears becoming fat.
- Self-perception of the body is abnormal.
- Has distorted perception of own body
shape or weight.
- Due to weight loss, a female patient
has missed at least 3 consecutive periods
(or periods occur only when she is given
hormones)
Anxiety occurs
in different circumstances, and to different
degrees. You may experience excessive nervousness,
concern, apprehension, or worry about several
events or activities, and having trouble
controlling these feelings. Here is a list
of some of the typical symptoms:
- Feeling restless, edgy, keyed up
- Getting tired easily
- Having trouble concentrating
- Feeling more irritable
- Increased muscle tension
- Trouble sleeping (initial insomnia
or restless, unrefreshing sleep)
If someone develops a severe fear or sense
of discomfort that peaks within about 10
minutes, and experiences some of the following,
it is likely a panic attack:
- Chest pain or other chest discomfort
- Chills or hot flashes
- Choking sensation
- Dizzy, lightheaded, faint or unsteady
- Fear of dying
- Fears of loss of control or becoming
insane
- Heart pounds, races or skips beats
- Nausea or other abdominal discomfort
- Numbness or tingling
- Sweating
- Shortness of breath or smothering
sensation
- Trembling
If these symptoms are present, you may want
to discuss it with a therapist, or your
medical doctor.
Bulimia typically
begins during adolescence. The condition
occurs most often in women but is also found
in men. Someone with bulimia often eats
in binges. Typical symptoms are:
- They will consume much more food than
most people would in similar circumstances
and in similar period of time,
- Feels that the eating is out of control
- The bulimic repeatedly controls weight
gain by inappropriate means such as:
fasting, self-induced vomiting, excessive
exercise or abuse of laxatives, diuretics
or other drugs.
- Weight and body shape affect patient's
self-evaluation.
Codependency
is a term used to describe the tension in
a close family or other type of relationship
with an addict. For example: The alcoholic
becomes "Addicted To" the alcohol and the
codependent becomes "Addicted To" the alcoholic.
Some signs of Codependency are:
- Difficulty having fun.
- Low self-esteem often projected onto
others.
- Difficulty in developing or sustaining
meaningful relationships
- Belief that others cause or are responsible
for the codependent's emotions.
- Lack of self-confidence in making
decisions, no sense of power in making
choices.
- Feeling of fear, insecurity, inadequacy,
guilt, hurt, and shame, which are denied?
- Tendency to look for "victims" to
help.
- Lies, when it would be just as easy
to tell the truth.
- Covering up for others actions.
Depression
is a disturbance in mood that often has
varying degrees of sadness, disappointment,
loneliness, hopelessness, self-doubt, and
guilt. These feelings can be quite intense
and may persist long periods. Daily activities
may become more difficult, but the individual
may still be able to cope with them. You
may be experiencing depression if you tend
to experience:
- Extreme lack of energy or motivation.
- Disturbed sleep, early waking, difficulty
getting to sleep and waking up tired
after a normal night of sleep.
- Almost constant sense of anxiety.
- Sensation of utter despair, hopelessness
or uselessness of everything.
- Irritability and physical exhaustion,
you might be suffering from depression.
- Lack of concentration
- Lack of sexual drive.
- Irrational fears such as fear of
death, thoughts of suicide, or fear
of committing suicide.
Grief & Loss
-- it is normal to experience grief feelings
when a loved one has passed away. Though
painful, reaction, of sadness, feeling listless,
lack of focus, lack of appetite, guilt,
sleep changes, lack of motivation, lack
of sleep, feeling overwhelmed, and lack
of motivation are all common. Professional
help becomes more necessary when these feelings
continue to plague someone, or prevent
them from fulfilling their normal activities.
Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder (PTSD) is a psychological reaction
to an intensely stressful trauma. A trauma
is a wound. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
results from exposure to an overwhelming
trauma, such as rape, accidents, fires,
war, or abuse. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
encompasses many symptoms. The trauma is
relived through disturbing thoughts, images,
and perceptions that intrude uncontrollably.
Common descriptions of traumatic memory
are seeing the trauma occurring on a movie
reel or screen. Sleep is invaded by insomnia
and/or nightmares. One may fear going to
bed if one was sexually abused in bed. Affected
persons are acting or feeling as if the
traumatic event were recurring.
Relationship
& Marital Problems -- Marital or relationship
distress is one of the most frequently encountered
and disturbing human problems. Everyone
who is married - or in a serious relationship
- experiences difficulties, but for some,
these troubles reach the point that partners
become so disappointed and upset about their
situation, and may even come to question
whether they want to continue to remain
in the relationship.
Nearly every couple can benefit from
some help at times, and many people find
the process to be helpful regardless of
how well their relationship is going.
You do not need to be in a troubled situation
to be in couple's counseling. Pre-marital
counseling is also available.
Self Esteem
-- Many people grow up believing themselves
to be unworthy or inadequate. If left
untreated these self-perceptions can affect
marriages, relationships, parenthood,
careers, etc. If this describes you, you
do not have to live this way.
Stress
Management -- Every day stressful
situations can increase and become magnified
until they begin to cause problems, even
as sleep disturbance, moodiness, easily
angered, lack of concentration and dreadful
relationships. If left untreated, physical
symptoms may may develop, and worsen the
situation.
Work related
issues - Sometimes work causes difficulties
that can affect other aspects of your
life, such as job burnout, job stress,
and overwork. Some specific causes of
stress are lack of control over work-related
decisions, being bombarded by technology,
lack of resources, workplaces changes,
downsizing, or inadequate working decisions.
